Twenty-Four

Kamala Khan couldn’t decide if the quivering sensation in her belly was excitement or nerves. She led the two web-slingers down the block to a café and righted one of the tables. If they sat against the wall, the building would keep most of the hail off. Although she’d brokered some peace for the moment, it might not hold, and she didn’t want to go inside and have Spidey and Venom bust the place up in a fight.

Eddie stuck close to her the entire time. So close that she almost hit him with a chair when she turned around with it. He backed off a fraction of an inch at the most. Certainly not enough space to put the chair down. So she held it and wondered at his clinginess. When she thought it through, she realized he’d been orbiting around her, keeping her between him and Spider-Man at all times. Maybe he figured Spidey wouldn’t hit a teenager. Or a girl. Or anyone who didn’t deserve it. Or perhaps he was trying to keep his own temper at bay.

Spider-Man wasn’t any calmer. She couldn’t see his expression, of course, but tension was written in every line of his body. It worried her. He’d always been the kind of guy who would crack a joke at the moment when it seemed like all hope was lost. Now he might as well have carried around a neon sign that said, “About to explode at any moment.”

Maybe Eddie was right to keep her in the middle. Hopefully she could keep World War III from popping off in the middle of a little French café.

At least now she knew one thing. That flippy feeling in her belly was definitely nerves.

She gestured toward the table.

“Sit,” she ordered.

They did. She took a seat, too, scooting close to the wall to shield herself from the hail. She’d never seen a storm like this. Usually, hail spat from the sky for a couple of minutes tops, and then it was over. But this one showed no signs of stopping.

“I’m not sure I get this. Can you explain it to me again?” she asked Eddie.

He scooted his chair a little closer to hers and nodded. His eyes didn’t even flicker toward Spider-Man. Not once. It was probably better that way.

“I’ll give it a try, but there’s no telling how much I’ll get out,” he said. “Like I said before, Loki tells me this is all related. The weird weather. The portals. They’re all a part of Osborn’s plan to open a gateway for a guy they call the Master.”

“That’s not very creative,” said Kamala.

“His real name is…” Eddie hesitated. “Let me spell it out for you.” He traced the letters out in the drifts of snowy hail covering the table: D-O-R-M-A-M-M-U. “He’s strong enough to take an Asgardian god and make a slave out of him.”

Spider-Man tensed, his hands gripping the edge of the ornate iron-wrought table. “Are you sure? How do we know you’re not making this up?”

Eddie smiled, bitterness practically dripping from his mouth.
